Common Causes

Expansion Tank

BMW's plastic coolant expansion tank is a well-known failure point — it can crack or weep at the seams over time and is often the first place we check.

Water Pump

Many modern BMWs use an electric water pump with a plastic impeller, which can fail without warning — a common cause of sudden overheating.

Thermostat Housing

The thermostat housing on many BMW engines is plastic and can crack or leak at the gasket as it ages and heat-cycles over the years.

Hoses & Connections

Coolant hoses and their connections degrade with heat and age, and a slow leak here can be easy to miss until it becomes a bigger problem.

Radiator

Head Gasket (Less Common)
